Germany Returns Looted Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

At least 20 artefacts that were looted from the former west African kingdom of Benin 125 years ago have been handed over by Germany to Nigeria.

The Benin Bronzes are part of the total of 1,130 bronzes held in Germany which the European country promised to return.

The handovers are the clearest sign yet of growing momentum toward the return of artefacts stolen from Africa by Europeans during the colonial period. In 2021, Germany agreed to start returning the Benin bronzes held in its museums.

90% of Africa's cultural heritage currently lies outside the continent. Pressure has mounted on former colonial powers to return all artwork to their places of origin.

Nigeria is building a museum in Benin City, to house the returned artefacts.
