Decade of Democracy Data in Africa Revealed in New Report

Findings from a new survey published by the pan-African research group Afrobarometer show that more Africans prefer democracy to other forms of government. The group's "flagship survey" Africa Insights 2024 has found that 66% of Africans appreciate the democratic system of governance, while large majorities reject one-man rule by 80%, one-party rule by 78%, and military rule by 66%.

The data spans over a decade of research "including our latest round of nationally representative surveys in 39 countries", and cautions that while support for democracy offers reasons for optimism, "the real problem on the continent is rooted not in a demand-side failure of popular support, but in a supply-side failure by African leaders to deliver".

A determined democracy movement, which drew thousands of Sudanese to near-daily demonstrations – in the face of beatings and killings by security forces – succeeded in dislodging an autocrat and ushering in a civilian-led transition government. Now, the protesters' courage has turned to helping each other survive a catastrophic war (file photo).
