Former Botswana President Returns From Exile to Face Trial

Former president Ian Khama has made a surprise return to the country after nearly three years in self-imposed exile.

He faces 14 charges, which include illegal possession of firearms and money laundering. Khama, who leads a splinter opposition party, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), has denied the criminal charges, saying they are politically motivated.

Khama left the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) founded by his father Seretse Khama, Botswana's first president, after a dispute with current President Mokgweetsi Masisi in 2019. Khama had led Botswana for 10 years until 2018.
