'Step Up Efforts On Sudan,' UN Tells World Leaders

UN Resident Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has urged world leaders gathering at the 79 UN General Assembly in New York to step up efforts in ending the devastating conflict, as well as ensure unrestricted access for dozens of aid organizations to reach millions of people facing acute hunger and disease.

Sudan is expected to be at the center stage of discussion this week when some member states join their voices with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Refugee Agency to call for urgent support to address the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

About 20,000 people have been killed since the fighting began last year between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has caused the displacement of more than 10 million people. An outbreak of cholera caused by recent flooding is aggravating an already dire situation.
