Violence Against Women, Girls Doubles in Sudan Since War Began
A new report by UN Women warns that Sudan's warring parties are using sexual violence as a weapon of war, and that gender-based violence has doubled since the conflict began in April 2023, with up to 6.7 million people needing assistance by the end of last year.
Displaced women and girls suffer abuse every day but do not report it due to fears of stigma from other community members. Cases of conflict-related sexual violence, sexual exploitation, and abuse have been growing since then, especially in Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan.
The UN calls Sudan one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Since rival generals of the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces plunged the country into war more than 17 months ago, an estimated 20,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured. Sudan now is also the world's largest hunger crisis, with nearly 26 million people facing acute hunger.
