Educating Girls Generates Economic Transformation in Africa

In an op-ed published on the eve of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the President and CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, Reeta Roy, wrote about Africa's youthful energy as a driving force of economic and social progress all over the continent. The power of Africa's youth to drive the continent's economic transformation, she argues, hinges on a critical factor: "harnessing the full energy and talents of young women and girls across Africa." Her op-ed set the stage for two pivotal Mastercard Foundation events hosted on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 22 at the Millenium Hilton New York, One UN Plaza Hotel. The events titled Powering Parity--Inclusive Education for a Sustainable Future and Invincible: Empowering Women, Transforming Africa addressed the critical issues of girls' education and women's economic empowerment in Africa.
