EU Fishing Vessels to Exit Senegal Waters as Accord Ends
The European Commission has decided not to renew the fishing agreement between Brussels and Dakar due to "shortcomings" in illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
Jean-Marc Pisani, the EU ambassador for West Africa, said the agreement won't be renewed for the time being because Senegal failed to act against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Pisani said European boats will stop fishing in Senegal's exclusive economic zone as of midnight on 17 November.
Foreign fishing off Senegal became a source of controversy last March after Bassirou Diomaye Faye won the presidency. Faye has promised to restore sovereignty over fishing.
