Why Ghana's Peaceful Election Matters

Successful elections and transitions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana have offered a counter-narrative to the military coups that have plagued the region in recent years, writes Azu Ishiekwene in the Leadership newspaper. He said Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia early concession "reinforced a trend started in 2015 by Nigeria's former president Goodluck Jonathan".

Former president John Mahama  defeated Bawumia by a margin of 1.8 million votes, a result widely described as a referendum on the current administration's performance.

Ghanaian voters went in numbers to cast their ballots on Saturday, December 7, 2024, under the Fourth Republic multi-party democracy, described by Ecowas observers as "peaceful and orderly".

More than 800 candidates were vying for the 276 Parliamentary seats, while 12 candidates, including four independents, sought to replace outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
