31 Years Later, Could Formula One Return to Africa via Rwanda?

President Paul Kagame has announced that Rwanda has formally submitted an application for hosting the Formula One Grand Prix during the FIA General Assembly in Kigali. Several countries in the region have expressed an interest in hosting F1 races, but it is believed that Rwanda's plans are at an advanced stage for more serious discussion.

Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has thrown his support behind Rwanda and South Africa as emerging contenders to host a Formula One race in Africa. "The time is 100% right. We can't be adding races in other locations and continue to ignore Africa, which the rest of the world just takes from. No one gives anything to Africa," he said.

It has been 31 years since Formula One has been held on the African continent, and Rwanda hopes to become only the second African country after South Africa to host one of the most expensive and sophisticated sports in the world.
