Mahama Assumes Ghana's Presidency Amid High Expectation

John Mahama will have his work cut out for him when he takes over as the next president of Ghana on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis in a generation. Mahama, who previoulsy served as president from 2012 to 2017, made a dramatic comback following a big win against the ruling party's candidate, outgoing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

"The economic situation is dire, and I'm going to put my soul, physique and everything into it and focus on making lives better for Ghanaians,"  he said after his comfortable victory in December.

Police have put in place tight security measures to ensure a "smooth and successful" swearing-in ceremony as regional and world leaders converge on Accra to grace the occassion.
