Empty Shelves in Zimbabwe as Economic Crisis Deepens

Several Zimbabwean retailers have downsized their operations due to the ongoing economic shocks, which is a further indicator of the country's problems.

According to NewZimbabwe.com, many retail outlets are becoming shells in Harare. OK Zimbabwe outlets in Marimba, Hillside, Kuwadzana 2 and 5, as well as N. Richards Tynwald, have limited stock and empty shelves, while some essential commodities, such as cooking oil and sugar, have disappeared from several residential areas in Harare.

Zimbabwe's economy is struggling, largely due to the underperformance of its currency. Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), the country's sixth currency, was introduced in 2024 to stabilize the economy. However, it has underperformed and is now part of the black market.

Meanwhile, a group of liberation war veterans is calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign, accusing the president of nepotism, corruption, and failing to address the moribund economy.
