Calls for Justice Grow After South African Gay Imam’s Murder

Muhsin Hendricks, South Africa's first openly gay imam and a prominent advocate for LGBTQI+ rights within the country's Muslim community, was shot dead in an apparent assassination in Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth) in the Nelson Mandela municipality. Hendricks was killed after the car in which he was traveling was ambushed.

Hendricks was a figure of change, seeking to reconcile Islam with LGBTQI+ identities. He founded several organizations, including The People's Mosque and Al-Ghurbaah, where queer Muslims could practice their faith openly. He was dedicated to offering marginalized individuals a space for acceptance, and his death has sparked outrage among those who decry the violence rooted in distorted religious interpretations.
